Wright's books in Oak Park

The archive of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park, Illinois, has a collection of twenty-six books that were owned by Wright during the years he lived in Oak Park (roughly 1890-1910), as well as a smaller number of books owned during this period by Wright's wife, Catherine, or their children.  These books are listed and described in The Wright Family Library, written by Margaret Klinkow and published in 1994.[1]

Even though some of the books belonged to Catherine or the children, Wright would have been familiar with them (several, in fact, are inscribed as gifts to the children from their father); they therefore can all be considered part of Wright's "library," broadly speaking, during this Oak Park period.  In the list given here, the books considered to have belonged to Catherine or the children are indicated as such, in a note to the entry.

The Wright Family Library publication also refers to a group of Asian (mainly Japanese) books that belonged to Frank and Catherine Wright, and states that a list of them can be obtained from the Home and Studio Research Center (now part of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust).  These Asian books are not included in this website.
